How to Measure Your Neck for a Choker Before Ordering Online

by Jihaan Savla on Oct 29, 2026

Square shape oval silver antique gold plated choker jewellery set

Quick answer: Wrap a soft tape or a piece of string snugly around the base of your neck, mark the point where it meets, and measure it. Compare that number with the length on the choker product page, and look for an adjustable closure. Ask us on WhatsApp if the listing is unclear. A choker is the one necklace that really depends on your neck size. Too tight and it feels uncomfortable; too loose and it slides, flips or looks like a regular necklace. Because a choker sits high and close, a small difference changes the look more than it would with a long chain. This guide shows how to measure at home and read the listing, so that you can order online with more confidence. Most of what we sell is fashion jewellery in plated brass or alloy, not solid gold, with a very few genuine sterling silver pieces.

How do I measure my neck for a choker?

Use a soft tape measure, or a piece of string and a ruler. Wrap it around the base of your neck where a choker would sit, snug but not tight, and keep one finger under it to check comfort. Note the length where the tape meets. If you are using string, mark the meeting point and lay it flat on a ruler. Measure twice, because it is easy to pull the tape tighter than you will want to wear it. Ask a family member to help, since measuring alone in a mirror makes it hard to keep the tape level.

How much room should I leave?

Chokers are meant to be snug, but you should still be able to swallow, turn your head and sit comfortably. A small gap of about one finger is a good guide for most people. If you plan to wear it for a long function, leave a little more room than you would for a short photoshoot. Our guide on fixing a necklace that sits too low or too high explains the effect of length on the fit.

What do I look for on the product page?

Check the stated length, whether the closure is a hook, a lobster clasp or a dori (string) tie, and whether there is an extension chain or an adjustable tie. A dori or chain extender gives you a range, while a fixed hook gives one size. Our guide to reading jewellery measurements on a product page covers all the details. Browse choker sets and kundan choker sets and compare their listings. If the page does not state a length, do not guess: send us the product link on WhatsApp and ask before you order.

Does the neckline change which choker fits?

It does. A choker needs the base of the neck to be visible, so it works best with open, V or boat necklines, or with a high neck only if it sits above the collar. With a high-neck blouse, see our guide to wearing a choker with a high neck blouse. For the right length for other necklaces, read the necklace length guide.

Does the thickness or weight of the choker matter?

Yes. A wide choker with many rows or large stones takes up more of the neck and feels tighter than a slim one of the same length, and a heavy one pulls the clasp to the back. If you have a shorter neck, a slim choker or a pearl string usually looks more comfortable, while a longer neck can carry a broad kundan choker. Read the weight and the width on the product page, and picture the width against your own neck with a strip of paper. For daily wear a lighter choker is easier, and the pearl choker sets and choker sets under Rs 1000 are good places to start comparing. Our guide to necklaces for short and long necks adds more detail.

What if I am between two sizes?

Choose the larger size if the choker has an adjustable tie or extender, because you can tighten it but not loosen it. If it has a fixed hook, the larger size is usually more comfortable. If you are still unsure, ask us on WhatsApp and send your measurement; we will tell you what the listing allows.

Can I adjust the fit after it arrives?

Some small changes help. A dori can be tied higher or lower, and wearing the choker over a plain neckline sits differently than over a collar. Try it on the day it arrives, with the outfit you bought it for, and check it sitting, standing and turning your head. If the piece is damaged or wrong on arrival, report it within two days of delivery. Please check the measurement before ordering to avoid any mismatch.
