Jewellery for Each Saree Drape: Nivi, Gujarati, Bengali and More
by Jihaan Savla on Oct 29, 2026
Quick answer: The drape decides which piece shows. A nivi drape shows the neckline and shoulder, so choose a necklace and earrings. A seedha pallu in front covers the chest, so lead with earrings and bangles. A Bengali drape with a loose pallu suits a long haram. Saloni Fashion Jewellery, Mumbai, ships free across India.

Most advice on saree jewellery talks about fabric and colour. The drape matters just as much, because it decides how much of the neck, shoulder and arm is on show. The same necklace that looks right with a nivi drape can disappear under a seedha pallu. This guide goes through the common drapes and what to wear with each, so you can decide before you open the jewellery box. Most of what we sell is fashion jewellery in plated brass or alloy, not solid gold, with a very few genuine sterling silver pieces.
Which jewellery suits the nivi drape?
The nivi drape, with the pallu over the left shoulder, leaves the neckline and most of the chest visible. It is the most flexible drape, so it takes a necklace set, a choker or a long chain. Match the necklace to the blouse neckline: a deep neck takes a longer piece and a high neck takes a choker. Our necklace for each blouse neckline guide shows the pairs. For a ready set, browse necklace sets and choker sets.
What goes with the seedha pallu or Gujarati drape?
In a seedha pallu drape, the pallu comes forward over the right shoulder and covers much of the chest, so a heavy necklace is hidden and can snag the fabric. Put the weight on the ears and wrists instead: statement jhumkas or kundan earrings, a stack of bangles, and perhaps a maang tikka. If you want a necklace, choose a short one that sits above the pallu edge. Read our Gujarati wedding guest jewellery look for a full outfit example.
How should I dress a Bengali or open-pallu drape?
The Bengali drape, with a wide pleated pallu and often a bunch of keys or a brooch, is traditionally worn with antique gold and red borders. A long haram or an antique gold necklace falls cleanly over a pallu worn loose, and bangles in a matching tone complete it. Keep earrings medium sized so the pallu border stays the focus. Our Bengali wedding guest look gives a complete example.
What suits the Maharashtrian nauvari drape?
The nauvari (nine-yard) drape is worn like a dhoti and leaves the chest and shoulders open, so it carries a heavy look: a short gold-tone necklace, a tikka, bangles and a nose pin. We list a few nose rings and nath styles, and our Maharashtrian nath without piercing collection is the closest match. For the full look, see our nauvari saree jewellery look. Some traditional pieces, such as bugdi, are not listed online, so ask us on WhatsApp.
Does a pinned or pre-stitched saree change the jewellery?
A pre-pleated or pinned saree sits more firmly, so you can wear longer earrings and dangling pieces without worrying about the drape pulling. Check where the pins land: a brooch or safety pin close to a necklace can snag it. With a lightweight fabric, choose a short necklace so nothing slides. Pin the pallu first and put the jewellery on afterwards, then lift your arms once to check that nothing catches. Our broader saree types guide covers fabric, and the saree jewellery page shows pairings to shop.
Do the blouse sleeves change which bangles and earrings I wear?
They do, and the drape makes it more important. With a seedha pallu the arm is often partly covered, so bangles are seen mainly at the wrist, and a stack of four to six looks right. With a nivi drape and a sleeveless or short-sleeve blouse, the whole arm shows, so a pair of slim bangles on each wrist or one bold kada keeps it tidy. Full sleeves hide most of the arm, which makes bangles less important and earrings more so. A high collar or hair worn down hides the earring, so check that the earring still shows once your hair is set. Read our guide on bangles for sleeveless, elbow and full sleeve blouses for specific counts.
How do I choose when I am not sure of the drape?
Look in the mirror once the saree is draped, before you put on any jewellery. Note which bare areas you can see: neck, shoulders, arms, ears. Put the most striking piece on the area that is most visible, then keep the rest quieter. When in doubt, pick earrings first, because ears show in every drape. Our guide on how many pieces to wear helps you stop at the right count.
