What is fashion jewellery, and how is it different from real gold?

Fashion jewellery (also called imitation or artificial jewellery) is made from brass and alloy and finished with a layer of gold, rose gold, rhodium or oxidised silver plating. It is not solid gold or silver and carries no bullion value. What it gives you is the design, weight and finish of traditional Indian goldwork at a small fraction of the cost, which is why most people own several fashion jewellery sets and one or two real gold pieces.

What are Saloni's products made of?

Brass or alloy bases, plated in gold, antique gold, rose gold, rhodium or oxidised silver, and set with kundan-style stones, cubic zirconia (American diamond), pearls and coloured stones. The exact material and plating for each piece is listed on its product page.

Is artificial kundan jewellery real gold?

No. Traditional kundan is fine jewellery, where stones are set in pure gold foil. Artificial kundan copies that look with glass or crystal stones set in a plated brass base. Saloni's kundan pieces are the second kind: fashion jewellery, not solid gold, priced accordingly.

What is kundan jewellery?

Kundan is a traditional Indian setting technique where stones are held in place by fine layers of refined metal rather than prongs. In fashion jewellery, kundan-style pieces use uncut glass or crystal stones set into a gold-toned base, giving the flat, milky-white look associated with Rajasthani and Mughal bridal jewellery. What is the difference between kundan, polki and American diamond?

Kundan uses uncut, flat stones with a matte, milky appearance and reads traditional and bridal. Polki is similar but uses uncut diamond-like stones with more depth and sparkle. American diamond (cubic zirconia, or CZ) is a faceted, brilliant-cut stone that looks closest to a modern diamond and suits parties and receptions more than traditional ceremonies. Will gold-plated jewellery lose its colour?

All plating wears eventually, and how fast depends on how it is treated. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, water and cosmetics strip plating quickest. Put jewellery on last when getting ready, wipe it with a dry soft cloth after wearing, and store each piece in a separate zip pouch away from air. How should I store and clean a kundan set?

Keep the necklace and earrings flat in a soft pouch, away from moisture. After wearing, wipe the stones and metal with a dry soft cloth. Avoid soaking, dipping in water or using chemical cleaners, which loosen the stone settings and wear the plating.

Is your jewellery safe for sensitive skin?

Our pieces are brass and alloy based. Most people wear them without any issue, but anyone with a known nickel sensitivity should be cautious with extended wear, particularly for earrings. If you react to costume jewellery generally, choose designs with a rhodium or thicker gold plating and limit continuous wear.

Which colour kundan goes with a green or yellow mehndi outfit?

Pick one colour from the outfit and echo it in the stones, or contrast it. Pink, ruby and multicolour kundan lift a green outfit, and green or pink kundan sits well against yellow. White and pearl kundan suit a softer, minimal look with any colour.

Should I wear a hathphool for mehndi?

Is a kundan maang tikka suitable for mehndi?

Can I wear jhumkas instead of a necklace for mehndi?

What kundan jewellery should I wear for haldi?

Is kundan jewellery safe around turmeric and water?

Treat it with care. Water, oils and turmeric paste are hard on plating and stone settings. If you can, put jewellery on after the haldi is applied, wipe off any turmeric promptly with a soft cloth and do not soak the piece.

Can bridesmaids wear matching kundan jewellery?

Yes. Many groups choose one colour family, such as pearl and white or green, and pick different pieces within it so everyone is coordinated without looking identical.

Buying, delivery and returns

Do you ship across India, and how long does delivery take?

Yes. Shipping is free across India. Orders usually dispatch in 1-2 days and arrive in about 4-15 days. Our shipping policy has the details.

What if my order arrives damaged or not as ordered?

Report it within 2 days of delivery, with photographs, by WhatsApp or email. The full terms are in our refund policy.

Does a kundan necklace set include earrings and a maang tikka?

Most sets include a necklace and a pair of matching earrings, and many also include a maang tikka. The exact contents are written in each product title and description, so check the listing before you order.

Is there a minimum order?

No. You can buy a single piece online. Our website is built for retail customers; wholesale is a separate service (see below).

Can I see the jewellery before buying?

Yes. Our showroom is at F 80, 81 & 82, Hi Life, Phirozshah Mehta Road, Santacruz (West), Mumbai 400054, open Monday to Saturday, 11 am to 7 pm. Plating tone and weight are difficult to judge from photographs, so you are welcome to visit and inspect stock in person.

Choosing the right piece

What jewellery does a bride need?

The standard bridal set is a necklace (often a choker plus a longer haram), matching earrings, a maang tikka, bangles or kadas, and a nath or nose ring. Many brides add a hathphool, a kamarband and a kaan chain to support heavy earrings. Buying these as a matched set avoids the common problem of metal tones not agreeing. Short or long mangalsutra?

Short mangalsutra (roughly 16 to 20 inches) sits at the collarbone and works under office and western wear. Long mangalsutra (24 to 30 inches) is the traditional length worn with sarees and at ceremonies. Many women own both and switch depending on the day.

How do I know my bangle size?

Indian bangle sizes run from 2.4 to 2.10, measured by internal diameter. If you are unsure, especially when gifting, choose an openable kada or an adjustable bracelet instead of a fixed bangle set. See our full bangle size guide for how to measure at home.

Which earrings work for daily wear?

Studs and tops. They sit flush on the lobe, weigh very little and stay comfortable through a full day. Save jhumkas for festivals and chandbalis or chandeliers for weddings and receptions.
