Necklace Length Guide: Choker to Rani Haar, and What Suits What
by Jihaan Savla on Sep 03, 2026
Quick answer: Necklace length ranges from a tight collar (30-33 cm) to a long rope (91 cm+), with choker (35-41 cm) sitting at the throat, princess (43-48 cm) the most common everyday length, and matinee to opera (51-86 cm) or a long rani haar for high necklines and sarees. Saloni Fashion Jewellery, Mumbai stocks short sets, long haars and malas across these lengths.

Necklace length changes how a piece reads more than almost any other single factor, and Indian and Western jewellery use different names for the same measurements. This guide sets out the standard lengths, how to measure your own, and which length suits which neckline, saree drape and occasion. Browse the range under necklace sets and long malas.
What are the standard necklace lengths?
Measured as the full worn loop, the common bands are: collar at roughly 30 to 33 cm, sitting tight against the throat; choker at about 35 to 41 cm, resting at the base of the neck; princess at 43 to 48 cm, the most common length, sitting on or just below the collarbone; matinee at 51 to 61 cm, reaching the top of the bust; opera at 71 to 86 cm, sitting below the bust; and rope or lariat beyond 91 cm, long enough to double or knot. Indian jewellery maps onto the same measurements under different names, covered below.
| Length | Measurement and where it sits |
|---|---|
| Collar | 30 to 33 cm, tight against the throat |
| Choker | 35 to 41 cm, base of the neck |
| Princess | 43 to 48 cm, on or just below the collarbone |
| Matinee | 51 to 61 cm, top of the bust |
| Opera | 71 to 86 cm, below the bust |
| Rope or lariat | 91 cm and longer, long enough to double or knot |
How do I measure my necklace size at home?
Take a piece of string or a soft tape and hang it around your neck where you want the necklace to sit. Adjust it until the low point is where you want the pendant or centrepiece to fall, then measure that full loop in centimetres or inches. That number is your worn length. If you are matching a necklace you already own, lay it flat and measure the full chain end to end including the clasp; that flat measurement is the worn length. Add 2 to 3 cm if you plan to wear it over a high blouse neckline or thick fabric.
What is a choker, and who does it suit?
A choker sits at the base of the neck, roughly 35 to 41 cm, above the collarbone. It draws the eye up, so it suits longer necks and wider or open necklines where there is bare skin to frame. On a very short neck a rigid choker can feel closing-in, and a slightly longer princess length is usually more comfortable there. In Indian bridal sets the choker is the piece worn highest, layered with a longer haar below it, and if you buy only one piece of a bridal set the choker is the one that reads most clearly in photographs.
What length is a "short set" versus a "long haar" in Indian jewellery?
A "short set" or short necklace set is usually choker to princess length, around 40 to 46 cm, sitting at or just below the collarbone with matching earrings. A "long set", "long haar" or "rani haar" runs matinee to opera length, roughly 55 to 80 cm, often as a second layer worn below a choker or on its own over a saree. A "mala" is a long single strand, frequently beyond 80 cm, in pearls, beads or gold-tone chain. The words describe length and layering intent more than a fixed centimetre figure, so check the measurement on the product page.
What is a rani haar or haram?
Rani haar in the north and haram in the south both mean a long, often broad statement necklace worn low on the chest, matinee to opera length. It is a bridal and heavy-occasion piece, usually worn as the lower layer under a choker so the two together fill the neckline for photographs. Temple jewellery harams in antique gold with deity motifs are a South Indian bridal staple. Because a haram is long and heavy, weight and a secure clasp matter more than on a short piece.
Which necklace length suits which neckline?
As a working guide: a bare or strapless neckline takes a choker or princess length that sits on the skin; a boat or wide neckline suits a choker or collar that echoes the horizontal line; a V-neck or sweetheart suits a princess or matinee length that follows the V; a high or closed neckline such as a high-neck blouse, a turtleneck or a closed kurta suits a longer matinee or opera length worn over the fabric, or a long mala, since a short necklace competes with the collar. The same balance thinking applies to earrings; see how to choose earrings for your face shape. Round necklines are flexible and take most lengths.
What necklace length works with a saree?
It depends on the blouse. With a deep or open blouse neckline, a choker or short set frames the skin and is the classic bridal choice. With a high or covered blouse, a longer rani haar or a long mala worn over the pallu reads better, since a short necklace disappears against the fabric. Many saree looks layer both, a choker at the neck and a haar or mala below, which is why Indian bridal necklaces are so often sold and worn in twos.
How do I layer necklaces of different lengths?
Leave a clear gap between each layer so they do not tangle or sit on top of each other; about 5 cm between lengths works. A common three-layer set is choker, princess and matinee. Keep the metal tone and stone colour consistent across the layers, or deliberately contrast one. The heaviest, most detailed piece goes lowest and lighter chains sit above. For stacking rings, bangles and earrings as well, see how to layer jewellery. If two necklaces keep sliding together, a multi-strand spacer clasp at the back holds them apart.
What length should I choose for a mangalsutra?
Daily-wear mangalsutra are usually princess to matinee length, around 45 to 60 cm, long enough to tuck inside a blouse or kurta but short enough not to catch. Longer traditional mangalsutra run to 70 cm or more and sit visibly on the chest for occasions. Our mangalsutra designs guide covers short, long and layered styles and when each is worn. If it is for everyday wear, err shorter and lighter.
Which necklace lengths should a retailer stock?
Weight the buy toward princess and choker-length short sets, which are the everyday and semi-formal workhorses and reorder steadily. Carry matinee and opera-length rani haars and harams as a smaller, wedding-season-weighted run, and a few long malas for the covered-neckline and layering customer. Stock short sets and long haars that share a design language so a buyer can layer them into a bridal look from one counter. Our guide to ordering wholesale jewellery in India covers how size and length breaks work within a design.
