What are the warning signs of a fake wholesale supplier?
No single sign is proof, but several together are enough to walk away:
- No physical address, or an address that does not exist when you look it up.
- Only a mobile number, no business name, no landline, no showroom.
- Prices well below what every other supplier quotes for similar work.
- Pressure to pay quickly before a "price rise" or "stock finishing".
- No GST number, or a business name that does not match the bank account you are asked to pay.
- Refusal to let you place a small trial order first.
- "Reviews" that are only forwarded screenshots, never a verifiable page or a real buyer you can contact.
Is it safe to pay a wholesale jewellery supplier in advance?
Advance payment is normal in this trade for a first order with a new buyer, so being asked for it is not itself a red flag. The way to make it safe is to limit exposure: keep the first order small, pay by a traceable method into an account whose name matches the registered business, and get an invoice before or with payment. How do I know if a supplier's catalogue photos are real?
Reverse image search a few of their product photos. If the same images appear on other sellers' pages or on marketplace listings, the supplier is reposting, not showing their own stock. Ask for a short video of the actual piece in hand, or a photo of it next to a slip with the current date. A real manufacturer can send their own studio and in-hand shots on request; a reseller working off a borrowed catalogue usually cannot.
What is a sample-and-switch, and how do I avoid it?
A good sample arrives, you place a bulk order on the strength of it, and the bulk is visibly poorer: thinner plating, looser stones, rougher finishing. Avoid it by asking that your sample is pulled from the same production lot you will reorder, and by checking the bulk against the sample the day it arrives. Treat the first order as a test, not a stock-up. Place a small mixed order across a few designs, pay for that order only, and judge the supplier on what actually matters over the next few weeks: did the stock match the photos, was the plating and finishing consistent across the lot, did they answer questions before and after payment, and did a replacement request get handled without an argument. A supplier who passes a small test is worth building depth with; one who does not has cost you very little.
What paperwork should a genuine wholesale supplier have?
A registered wholesale business in India has a GST number and a business name, and usually an address you can find and, for a manufacturer, a showroom you can visit. The invoice should carry the business name, address and GST number, and the bank account you pay should be in that same business name. None of this guarantees good stock, but its total absence is a strong signal to stay away.
