Wholesale vs Retail Jewellery Buying: What Changes for a Shop

by Jihaan Savla on Oct 18, 2026

Quick answer: Buying wholesale is a conversation, not a cart. You tell the supplier your shop type and categories on WhatsApp, receive designs and rates for those categories, confirm quantities, wait for stock and total to be confirmed, pay and then get dispatch. You buy for resale, so you also plan margin, mix and reorders, instead of choosing one piece you like.

Many shop owners start by buying a few pieces at retail to see how they sell. At some point the numbers say it is time to buy wholesale. The jewellery is the same fashion jewellery, but the way you buy, check and plan stock changes. This guide explains what changes, in plain terms and without figures, because rates and quantities depend on the category and design. It is written for retailers, boutiques and online sellers.

How is ordering different from a retail website?

A retail site gives you a cart and a fixed checkout. Wholesale at Saloni is led over WhatsApp: you message with your shop type and the categories you sell, and we send designs and rates for those categories instead of a huge file. You then confirm your selection with quantities, we confirm stock and the total, and we share payment details. Dispatch follows once payment is confirmed. The wholesale page sets out the same four steps.

Why are wholesale rates given by category and design?

Different categories cost different amounts to make and to hold, so a single flat rule does not fit. Earrings, necklace sets and bangles each have their own rates, and a minimum depends on the category and design. Ask for rates by category, and compare like with like. Our guide to ordering wholesale jewellery in India explains how to read terms.

What changes in how I choose designs?

At retail you pick what you like. At wholesale you pick what your customers will buy, in a mix. Start with fast movers such as earrings and jhumkas, then add one or two bridal or festive sets and daily wear pieces. Mixing categories in one order is common. Our guide to choosing categories for a small shop helps with the mix.

How do I check stock before I pay?

Ask for photographs and confirm availability of each design and colour in writing before paying. Photographs are available for the designs you stock. If you can, visit the Santacruz showroom, where buyers are welcome, and message ahead so the categories you want are ready. When the parcel arrives, follow our parcel checklist.

How do I plan margin and resale prices?

Work backwards from what your customers pay for similar pieces and leave room for packing, shipping and unsold stock. Do not copy another shop; decide your own rate per category. Our pricing guide for resale explains markup and margin without using fixed numbers.

Can I sell online if I buy wholesale?

Yes. Online sellers on Instagram, WhatsApp and marketplaces are welcome, and Saloni ships across India. Read the reseller sourcing and listing checklist, and plan your photos with how to photograph and post stock.
