Earring Backs Explained: Push Back, Screw Back, Hook and Clip-On

by Jihaan Savla on Oct 22, 2026

Round shape CZ silver plated set of 3 combo stud earrings

Quick answer: Push-back studs are the daily default, screw backs are the most secure for travel and heavy earrings, hook and hoop styles are the easiest to put on, and clip-on or screw-on fittings suit unpierced ears. Choose the closure for how you wear the earring: all-day comfort, security at a function, or no piercing at all. Always check the closure on the listing before you order.

Everyone checks the design of an earring. Almost nobody checks the back, and yet that small part decides whether the earring stays on, whether it pulls on the lobe and whether you can put it on in one try. A lost earring from a loose back is one of the most common small disappointments with jewellery.

This guide explains the closures you will meet on fashion earrings and when each one is the right choice. It is general information, not medical advice. If your ears are sensitive, read our guide on why fashion jewellery reacts with skin. Our pieces are fashion jewellery in plated brass or alloy, and a very few are genuine sterling silver.

What is a push-back earring?

A push back is a small post that passes through the ear and is held by a separate back that slides on. It is the most common closure on studs and small drops, and it is quick to put on and take off. Browse studs and tops for classic push-back styles.

The back can loosen over time, so check it occasionally and keep a few spares. If an earring is heavy, a push back alone may not be enough.

Is a screw-back earring more secure?

Yes. A screw back threads onto the post, so it grips more firmly and is a good choice for travel, dancing or heavier earrings. It takes slightly longer to fit, and you need to hold the earring steady while tightening. For a function where you will move a lot, a screw back is the sensible pick. Our guide to checking fashion jewellery quality tells you what else to look at on the finish.

What is a hook or hoop earring?

A hook earring hangs from a curved wire that passes through the ear, and hoops close with a small catch or a hinged post. They are the easiest to put on and look neat with drop and dangle earrings and light jhumkas. They are less secure than a screw back, so avoid them for very active events.

Look at how the hook closes: a hook with a small bend at the tip stays put better than a plain open curve.

Which earring backs suit heavy jhumkas and chandelier styles?

Heavy earrings need a secure back and often a little extra support. A screw back or a firm stud-style post helps, and an ear chain or support chain takes weight off the lobe. Our kaan chain collection and the kaan chain guide explain how a chain links the earring to the top of the ear. Read how to wear heavy earrings without pain for the full routine, and chandelier earrings for the styles that need it.

What if my ears are not pierced?

Clip-on and screw-on earrings use a gentle pad instead of a post, and they exist for non-pierced ears. Many designs are only made with a post, so ask us on WhatsApp if a particular design can be fitted differently, since we cannot promise it for every design. For the nose, see our Maharashtrian nath without piercing for a similar idea.

If you wear clip-ons for a long function, take a break from them, as the pressure can be tiring.

How do I keep earring backs from getting lost?

Keep spares, store pairs together and check the back before you leave home. Rubber or silicone backs from a local shop are a cheap extra for push-back styles. Our five-piece starter jewellery box and a simple pouch system keep pairs from getting separated.

Remove earrings before sleeping, bathing and workouts. For earrings at a budget, see earrings under Rs 500 or browse all earrings.

Which closure is safest to choose when buying earrings as a gift?

Choose studs or small drops with a push back or screw back, since you may not know how heavy an earring the person is used to, or how their ears feel. A gift that is light and secure is more likely to be worn. Check that the person has pierced ears before you buy, and keep the spare backs together with the pair. For small, low-cost gifts, earrings under Rs 500 make an easy choice.
