When to Take Artificial Jewellery Off: Shower, Gym, Pool, Sleep

Quick answer: Take artificial jewellery off for showers, swimming, gym workouts, cooking, cleaning and sleep. Water, soap, chlorine, sweat, heat and friction wear plating faster and can loosen glued stones. It is fine for office, shopping and functions if you keep it dry. When in doubt, jewellery goes on last and comes off first.

Many shoppers ask whether artificial jewellery can be worn in the shower, at the gym or while sleeping. Short answer: it can survive, but it will not last as long. Saloni Fashion Jewellery sells fashion jewellery in plated brass or alloy, so everyday activities that involve water, sweat or friction matter more than the age of the piece. Here is an activity-by-activity guide.

Can you wear artificial jewellery in the shower?

It is better not to. Hot water, soap and shampoo strip thin plating and can leave a film in stone settings, and damp pieces dull faster once dried. Take pieces off before you bathe and put them on after you are dry and dressed. If you forget once, wipe the piece dry and let it air. See our plating care guide for the full reasons.

Can you wear artificial jewellery to the gym?

It is not ideal. Sweat contains salt and acid that wear plating, and friction against machines, towels and clothing wears it faster. Studs are the least risky choice if you must wear something. Wipe and dry anything that got sweaty. Keep your gym jewellery separate from your function jewellery.

Can you swim or go to the beach in it?

No. Chlorine and salt water are the harshest conditions for plated jewellery, and sand can scratch the surface. Leave your jewellery at the hotel or home and take a basic pair of studs if you want something on. For holiday packing tips, read how to pack jewellery for a destination wedding.

What about cooking, cleaning and washing hands?

Remove rings, bangles and bracelets before cooking, dishwashing or cleaning, because soap, steam, oil and detergents harm plating, and bangles can catch on pans and counters. Hand sanitiser is also harsh on rings. Keep a small dish near the kitchen for quick removal.

Is it safe to sleep in artificial jewellery?

Better not to. Sweat and friction wear plating overnight, necklaces can tangle or snap, and earrings can catch on hair or pillows. Light studs are the exception many people keep on, but remove anything else. Our storage guide shows where to leave pieces at night.

Activity Wear it? Reason
Shower or bath No Water and soap strip plating
Gym or run Avoid Sweat and friction
Swimming or beach No Chlorine, salt and sand
Cooking or cleaning No Steam, oil and detergent
Sleeping Avoid Friction and tangling
Office or shopping Yes Dry, low-friction
Functions and parties Yes Short wear, wipe after

What about rain, humidity and monsoon days?

A few drops of rain will not ruin a piece, but wipe it dry when you get home and do not leave it damp in a pouch. In Mumbai humidity, store pieces with a silica gel sachet. More tips are in our monsoon jewellery guide.

Which pieces are the most forgiving if you must wear them?

Oxidised and antique gold finishes hide wear, and simple studs, rings and bangles are easier to wipe clean than detailed sets. Rotating two or three daily pieces also spreads the wear, as in our five-piece starter jewellery box.

A useful habit is to keep one small tray or dish at every place where you take jewellery off: near the bathroom door, the kitchen and the bedside. When removing a piece is easy, you will actually do it. Plated jewellery is not delicate in the sense of breaking, but it is sensitive to water and chemicals, and each avoided soak or sweaty workout adds up over months. Sterling silver pieces, which Saloni lists in very small numbers and marks clearly, are a different material, but they still dislike chlorine and harsh chemicals, so the same routine is a sensible default. If you travel often, carry a small zip pouch and a dry cloth so removing and storing jewellery takes seconds in a hotel room or office washroom. For festivals such as Holi, where colour, water and powder are involved, skip jewellery entirely, and put it on only after you have bathed and changed. Treat any piece that did get wet like a spill: wipe it, dry it fully, and only then store it. Small habits like these cost nothing and quietly add months to how good your favourite pieces look.

For pieces you will not need to remove often, browse lightweight daily wear jewellery, mangalsutra and payal and anklets, and match them to your day with the outfit hub.
