Jewellery for a Banarasi Saree: Kundan, Antique Gold, Pearl
by Jihaan Savla on Oct 29, 2026
Quick answer: A Banarasi saree already carries zari and brocade, so choose one strong piece and keep the rest quiet. A kundan or antique gold choker with matching jhumkas suits most Banarasi sarees. Match the metal to the zari, pick one colour from the border, and avoid piling on several heavy pieces together.

A Banarasi saree does a lot of the work on its own. The woven zari, the brocade and the heavy pallu all draw the eye, which means the jewellery has to support the saree instead of competing with it. Shoppers often ask whether to wear a full set or a single piece, and the honest answer is that it depends on the blouse neckline and how busy the saree is.
Our pieces are fashion jewellery in plated brass or alloy, and a very few are genuine sterling silver. Start with the outfit overview on our jewellery by outfit page and the dedicated saree jewellery page, then use this guide to narrow it down for brocade and zari.
Which metal tone goes best with Banarasi zari?
Match the tone of the zari. Gold zari looks best with gold-tone or antique gold pieces, and silver zari looks best with silver-tone or white stone pieces. Mixing the two is possible but easier to get wrong on a rich fabric, so decide on one tone before you shop. Browse antique gold jewellery for warm zari, and silver plated jewellery for silver zari.
A quick test helps: hold the necklace against the pallu in daylight. If the two golds look like different shades, change the piece, not the saree.
Should I wear a choker or a long necklace with a Banarasi saree?
If the blouse has a high or boat neckline, a choker sits cleanly above it and the pallu falls over the shoulder without tangling. If the blouse neckline is deep, a longer haram or rani haar fills the space nicely. Heavy pallus can catch on long strands, so test the drape in front of a mirror before you leave the house. See choker sets and long sets and haram, and read choker vs long haar with a saree for the full comparison.
If you are unsure, pick the choker. It is easier to carry through a long function than a heavy long strand.
Does kundan work with a Banarasi saree?
Yes. Kundan has the same rich, festive feel as brocade, so it is the safest choice for weddings and pujas. Pick a set where the stones echo one colour in the border, such as green, red or pink, and let the rest stay gold-tone. Kundan necklace sets give you the necklace and earrings already matched, and green kundan jewellery works well on red, maroon and wine sarees.
Do not use more than two stone colours. A red and green kundan set on a red saree already has enough going on.
What earrings suit a heavily woven Banarasi saree?
Choose earrings that finish the look instead of adding a second statement. With a statement necklace, a small jhumka or stud is enough. With no necklace, a larger chandelier or jhumka pair can carry the outfit on its own. Keep the weight comfortable if you will wear them for hours, and see our guide on wearing heavy earrings without pain before you decide.
Hair matters too: with an open hairstyle, earrings show only partly, so slightly longer drops work better than tiny studs.
Which colours work with a red, green or blue Banarasi?
Red Banarasi sarees take gold-tone and kundan best, with touches of green or pearl. Green sarees look good with red and gold, or with white pearl for a fresher look. Blue and purple sarees pair well with silver-tone and pearl. Our colour pages help you shop by shade: red jewellery, green jewellery and blue jewellery.
If your saree has a contrast border, repeat that border colour once in the jewellery and nowhere else.
Do I need a maang tikka and bangles as well?
Not always. A tikka suits weddings and festive evenings, but for a family function the necklace and earrings are enough. For bangles, a set of slim gold-tone bangles looks neat against the heavy fabric and is easier on the zari than wide, rough-edged pieces. Explore maang tikka and bangles and add only what the occasion needs, so the saree stays the star.
How do I look polished at a wedding in a Banarasi saree?
Think of the saree as the centrepiece and build outward in three steps. First choose the necklace based on the blouse neckline. Second pick earrings that suit the necklace, either matching or deliberately simpler. Third add a tikka or bangles only if the function is formal. Carry a small pouch for the pieces you take off after the ceremony, so nothing gets scratched or tangled.
If you are the bride, a fuller set from bridal jewellery sets makes sense. If you are a guest, one lighter set from necklace sets looks elegant without drawing attention away from the bride.
