American Diamond vs Cubic Zirconia vs Moissanite vs Zircon
by Jihaan Savla on Sep 01, 2026
Quick answer: American diamond and cubic zirconia (CZ) are the same lab-grown zirconium dioxide stone; moissanite is a different, harder material with more fire and cost; zircon is an unrelated natural gemstone. CZ dominates Indian fashion jewellery for its brightness and low cost. Saloni Fashion Jewellery, Mumbai stocks many CZ American diamond styles but does not sell moissanite.
Walk into any fashion jewellery shop in India and the clear sparkling stones are almost always called "American diamond". Online you will also see cubic zirconia, moissanite and zircon used for what looks like the same thing. They are not all the same. Here is what each one actually is, how they behave over time, and which one is in the piece you are looking at.
Is American diamond the same as cubic zirconia?
Yes. "American diamond", usually shortened to AD, is the Indian jewellery trade's name for cubic zirconia, or CZ. It is one material with two names. The word "American" is a leftover from the 1970s, when cubic zirconia was first mass-produced for jewellery in American and Soviet labs; there is nothing American about the stone in an Indian piece today. If a seller quotes you AD and CZ as if they were different things at different prices, they are quoting the same stone twice.
What is cubic zirconia (CZ) made of?
Cubic zirconia is a lab-grown crystal of zirconium dioxide. It is made by melting the raw powder at very high temperature and letting it crystallise in a controlled way, then cutting and polishing it like a gemstone. It is colourless, bright, and cheap to produce in volume, which is why it dominates fashion jewellery. On the hardness scale it sits around 8 to 8.5, below diamond at 10 but hard enough for everyday earrings and necklaces. It has strong "fire", the rainbow flashes you see when the piece moves.
What is moissanite, and how is it different from CZ?
Moissanite is a different lab-grown material, silicon carbide, and it is a step up from CZ in every way that matters for a diamond look. It is harder, around 9.25, so its facet edges stay sharp for far longer. It has even more fire than a real diamond, which is actually how many people spot it: the rainbow flashes can look excessive next to a diamond's whiter sparkle. It also shows a faint doubling of the facet lines under magnification because the material bends light in two directions. Moissanite costs more than CZ and less than diamond, and it turns up in higher-end "diamond-look" fashion and bridal-imitation pieces rather than everyday stock.
What is zircon, and is it the same as cubic zirconia?
No, and this is the most common mix-up because the names are so close. Zircon is a natural mineral, zirconium silicate, dug out of the ground. It is a real gemstone, most often seen in blue but also colourless and honey-brown. Cubic zirconia is entirely synthetic and shares only part of the name. Natural colourless zircon has excellent fire and can look like diamond, but it is relatively soft at about 7.5 and brittle, so its edges chip. It is priced as a genuine gem and is almost never what you get in inexpensive Indian fashion jewellery.
How can you tell CZ, moissanite and real diamond apart?
A jeweller uses a handheld thermal and electrical tester, which separates all three in seconds. By eye and hand there are softer clues. CZ is noticeably denser than diamond, so a CZ stone weighs more than a diamond cut to the same size, and it warms up quickly in your hand. CZ also loses its crispness with wear: after a year or two of daily use the facet edges round off slightly and the stone looks a little "soft". Moissanite gives itself away with its extra rainbow fire and the doubled facet lines under a loupe. A real diamond stays razor-sharp at the edges and throws a whiter, more contained sparkle. The old "fog test" and "sunlight test" are not reliable.
Does American diamond or CZ lose its sparkle over time?
It dulls, but most of that is cleanable rather than permanent. CZ picks up skin oil, soap film, hairspray and dust, which coat the stone and kill the sparkle; a soft brush with mild soapy water usually brings it back. The part that is permanent is edge wear: because CZ is softer than diamond, years of daily contact slowly abrade the facet junctions, and past that point cleaning no longer fully restores the life. Occasional-wear pieces stay bright for a long time. Moissanite holds its sparkle far longer because it is harder.
Which stone is used in Indian fashion jewellery, and why?
Overwhelmingly cubic zirconia, sold as American diamond. It is inexpensive, consistently bright, available in every size and cut, and it sits well in a rhodium-plated setting, which is why most stone-set contemporary pieces pair CZ with a white rhodium finish rather than gold. Moissanite appears in premium diamond-look ranges. Kundan and polki-style pieces use uncut glass or CZ set in the traditional foil technique; our guide to kundan vs polki vs American diamond covers that side, and gold plated vs rhodium vs oxidised silver explains why CZ and rhodium go together.
How do you care for CZ and American diamond jewellery?
Treat the sparkle as a cleaning job first. Once a month, soak the piece in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, work gently around each stone with a soft toothbrush, rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth. Keep perfume, hairspray and lotion off the piece, since the film they leave is the main reason CZ goes cloudy. Store stone-set pieces separately in their own pouches so a harder stone does not scratch a softer one. For the metal side, our gold-plated jewellery care guide applies, and how to check imitation jewellery quality covers judging how well the stones are set before you buy.
Is American diamond real, fake, or something in between?
It is a real stone, just not a diamond. Cubic zirconia is a genuine man-made crystal with its own properties, sold openly as an imitation of diamond, not a fraud. The honest description is "CZ" or "American diamond", never "diamond" on its own. This sits inside the wider fashion jewellery category explained in fashion vs imitation vs artificial jewellery: non-precious materials, described for what they are.
