Chhath Puja Jewellery Guide: What to Wear, Colours and When to Order

by Jihaan Savla on Oct 04, 2026

Quick answer: For Chhath Puja, women usually wear a traditional saree with a mangalsutra, bangles, sindoor and a few light gold-tone pieces, and keep jewellery simple for standing in water at the ghat. Red, maroon, green and gold tones suit best. Saloni Fashion Jewellery, Mumbai, stocks red and maroon jewellery, mangalsutra and sindoor dibbis, with free shipping across India.

Chhath Puja is a four-day festival in which women stand in water at a river or pond to offer arghya to the sun. It is traditional, simple and physically demanding, so the right jewellery is as much about comfort and practicality as about looks. This guide covers colours, sindoor and mangalsutra, what to wear in the water, bangles, and when to order. Everything we stock is gold-plated fashion jewellery in brass or alloy, not solid gold.

What jewellery do women wear for Chhath Puja?

Most women wear a traditional saree with the essentials of a married woman: a mangalsutra, bangles, a nose pin or nath if they wear one, and sindoor in the parting. A small necklace or a short pearl mala, simple earrings and a pair of bangles complete the look. Heavy sets are usually kept for the family gathering, not the ghat. Chhath is a festival of simplicity and discipline, so the aim is to look traditional and feel unhindered while you stand, bend and offer arghya. Think of the jewellery in two groups: the pieces that stay on through the whole ritual, and the pieces that come out for the family gathering afterwards.

Which colours suit a Chhath Puja saree?

Traditional Chhath sarees are often red, orange or yellow, with a bold border. Among the colours we stock, red and maroon sit most naturally, and gold-tone, pearl and white pieces go with almost any of these sarees. Green and pink also work well as festive accents. Browse red and maroon jewellery, green kundan jewellery and pink jewellery. We do not stock a dedicated orange or yellow range, so choose gold-tone pieces for those sarees. If you are unsure, take one colour from the border of your saree and match the stones to it, and let the rest be gold-tone. Avoid very dark or black stones with these sarees, as they can look heavy against bright cloth.

How do I style sindoor and a mangalsutra for Chhath?

Many women apply sindoor long along the parting for the puja and wear the mangalsutra visibly over the saree. Pick a length you are comfortable with, short enough not to snag when you bend to the water, and avoid very long pendant styles. Our mangalsutra collection has black bead chains in gold-plated finishes. A decorative sindoor dibbi is also useful for the puja thali and makes a good gift for the day.

What should I wear in the water at the ghat?

Keep it light and easy to dry. Stand in the water with simple gold-plated bangles, a small mangalsutra and plain studs, or remove jewellery altogether and put it on after arghya. Keep pearls and kundan dry: water and rubbing can loosen stones, glue and pearl coating, and plating wears faster when jewellery stays wet. Wipe pieces dry afterwards and store them separately, as explained in our gold-plated jewellery care guide. If your skin is sensitive, see why fashion jewellery can react with skin.

Which bangles work for Chhath Puja?

Bangles are central to the look, and a stack looks most traditional. For the ghat, choose a set you can dry quickly, such as plain or lightly textured gold-plated bangles in a set of two or four. For the evening gathering, switch to kundan bangles or coloured stone bangles. See all bangles, and our guide to matching jewellery with outfits for pairing them with a saree. Bangles that are too tight are hard to remove with wet hands, so pick a size that slides on and off easily.

What jewellery should I keep for the family gathering after arghya?

After the ritual, many families gather for prasad and photographs, and that is the time for a fuller look. A kundan necklace set, kundan bangles, a pair of jhumkas and a maang tikka can go on once you are dry and changed, or you can wear a lighter pearl mala. Keep these in their boxes at the ghat and carry them in a dry bag. If you plan to gift something to a mother-in-law or sister-in-law, read our mother-in-law gift guide for ideas.
